The sculpture of David —who, according to the biblical story, astutely defeated the giant Goliath— was placed in front of Palazzo Vecchio to remind the government that in the Republic, the people are stronger than the tyrants. At the same time, with this sculpture, Michelangelo portrayed an ideal of male beauty that combines physical strength, cultivation of mind, and passion for freedom.
I chose to take a photograph of that sculpture at night rather than in the daylight so as to emphasise the play of lights and shadows over the marble and the Palazzo’s walls.
